Happy year of the dog, Brisbane! Chinese New Year 2018 is finally upon us, so naturally we're gearing up for city-wide festivities and all the over-eating about to go down. From traditional celebrations in Chinatown, to 'zen-ing' out temple-style, race days and a full arvo dedicated to the humble dumpling, Chinese new year in Brisbane is about to go off.

This was far from the year we all hoped for, in fact it's been a disaster to say the least. But now we can finally celebrate the end of 2020 and with good tunes, delicious eats and most importantly, a whole lotta booze. These are the best New Year's Eve parties in Brisbane to welcome the much. Following the festivities in the Hotel Courtyard, make your way to The Lab Restaurant and Bar for the New Year’s Eve countdown and a cheeky nightcap to boot! Tickets are $165 per person. Chung Tian Temple

Nestled in the lush surrounds of Underwood Park, Chung Tian Temple is for those who like their Chinese New Year celebrations a little bit more traditional. A fully operating Zen Buddhist temple built in the style of the ancient temples of old, Chung Tian’s celebrations will take place over three days, with February 15 serving as the main attraction. On the Thursday, The temple will be offering up a food fair, multicultural performance, the opening of a new exhibition at the temple’s very own art gallery, a lion dance and a light offering service to help both the practicing and non-practicing ring in the New Year. Celebrations on the Friday and Saturday are more traditional still, with Buddha becoming the star of the show, but the Saturday will also feature a food and fun fair.

Doomben Racecourse is hosting a glitzy raceday to celebrate Lunar New Near 2018. Delivering live racing all throughout the day, alongside a range of traditional Asian festivities and entertainment, this is your op to throw on your Sunday best and enjoy the festivities. You didn’t hear it from us, but lion dancing is definitely going to make an appearance. Plus, racegoers will be given a red envelope on arrival with a cheeky gift inside. Doomben, you spoil us.

Dumpling Day At Wandering Cooks

BrisAsia is teaming up with Brisbane icons, Wandering Cooks to serve up the tastiest Chinese New Year celebration on the 2018 calendar. Derived from the day in the Lunar New Year Calendar when dumplings were shared amongst family and friends as a symbol of wealth, Brisbane’s Dumpling Day is set to offer something just a little bit different. All day, Wandering Cooks will be presenting varieties dumplings from across Asia as a way to show the world the story of this delicious and versatile dish. The opportunity to learn how to craft your own dumplings in the style of everywhere from Tibet to Palestine, alongside traditional jiaozi with a twist, will also be on offer. The Moreton Bay Region Lunar New Year festival is looking pretty lit (because fireworks, of course!). Taking place in Caboolture Town Square, this event will see the area filled with traditional Asian music and dance, authentic dishes, Chinese dragons, cultural displays, activities and workshops. The party will start at 4pm and kick on until 8pm, so you have plenty of time to sample your way around Asia in celebration of the Year of the Dog. Oh and, you guessed it, it’s all totally free and perfect for every member of the family.

Lunar New Year On King Street

Bowen Hill's King Street is doing Chinese New Year B.I.G. Transforming this little pocket of Brisbane into a mini Beijing street-scene, King Street is going all; combining traditional lion dancers, ALL the red lanterns and a foodie feast you won’t soon forget. Stop number one: Fat Dumpling, which will be offering all-you-can-eat dumplings alongside a set menu that includes such dishes as braised pork belly and fresh mango cake. Afterwards, roll yourself along to Banoi, which will be dishing up a three-course Vietnamese banquet of crispy spring rolls, your choice of main and an extra AF Vietnamese flan. All we can say is: challenge accepted. Just remember to get in quick, as bookings are essential.

Lunar New Year Rooftop Party Gibli Studio Screening

BrisAsia Festival will be throwing one happenin’ rooftop party this Chinese New Year. Taking place atop Sunnybank Plaza’s sprawling carpark, the Lunar New Year Rooftop Party will feature a stellar line-up of food options, dragon and lion dancers, lantern workshops, markets and K-Pop performances. And that’s all before the headline act: a screening of The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya by Studio Ghibli. In other words, it’s a pretty good excuse to get off the couch and to hit up Sunnybank Plaza this month.

Just when you thought Sunnybank Plaza was all you needed for your Chinese New Year plans, Sunny Park goes and drops a killer line-up of activities to accompany their foodie offerings. We’re talking Chinese calligraphy demonstrations, ice carving, lion dancing, kung fu performances and, the icing on the cake, a neon-lit lion dance set to speak to the disco-loving child in all of us.
